A Super8 cine film taken by Ken Hedley showing the departure of the last steam loco from South Blyth Shed, Northumberland in September 1967. There is a glimpse of an old snowplough that had been used on the Morpeth to Rothbury Branch. The roofless loco shed can be seen in the background. The roof was removed as a solution to the problem reported by loco crew of the shed always being too full of...

The fireman on a J27 NER loco, Ken Hedley, filmed in Super8 cine parts of the loco's journey from Morpeth to West Woodburn, Northumberland 2 years before closure of the line. A North British signal, crossing gate being opened and shunting operation are featured. The sound effects are not original but Ken's 2006 recorded commentary guides us along the way.

Very many thanks for this, and the music too. The line beyond Stanhope doesn't look to be in bad nick considering the length of time since regular cement trains ended. Is it too much to expect the eventual return of trains to Wearhead? Not in my lifetime I fear, but what a cracking journey that would be behind a NER G5 from Bishop Auckland. All the best..

Is the missing rail due to metal thieves? That was my first suspicion, but you could have removed it officially to do repairs elsewhere. I was going to ask how far you could take a light locomotive & brake-van. It seems you could get to Eastgate. Is that right?

I was pleased to see Ayton station and yard which I used to visit occasionally back in the 1970/1980s and well remember penmanshiel tunnel collapsing in which 2 local lads died. Interesting to see the old cement works at Oxwell mains prior to it being modernised. I used to wonder how anyone could live in the local cottages there as they were permanently under a grey cement dust and not so good for the lungs. Thanks for sharing video appreciate it.

Noticing the 03 in the shunt neck at Berwick put shudders down my spine. Memories of ferrying 03s from Gateshead to Tweedmouth and Berwickback passenger in the1970s and return the next day. Usually when on 06:00 control orders.

What a fabulous video. Come on Weardale Railway it is time to restore the railway all the way to where the track runs out and then onwards to Westgate or Weardale itself.

+J Martin I am sure the Trust would like to reuse this stretch but more funds are needed so please get your friends and family to support the Trust's Class 122 'bubble car' train service by paying to travel on the picturesque 5+ mile Wolsingham to Stanhope stretch. Services are likely to re-commence at Easter. Look on their web site nearer the time for details- www.weardale-railway.org.uk/

The money shouldn't be a problem, they can find 15 billion pounds for a brand new railway in London at the drop a hat (which will open 1 year later than it was ment to) So why not spend some money here and reopen as proper rail line? Oh silly me its money wasted on people who dont live in the south .

Yay! Nice to hear an accent from home. Quite moving in a wistful kind of way. I did a school project at the start of my last year in junior school - it was about the last run of the Wansbeck Piper in October 66. It's nice to see a bit of film that shows the reality of the line, rather than the jam-packed last day when everyone, of course, somewhat late in the day, realised what they were about to lose.
